The Presidents Directive

The Presidents Directive

On June 20, 2014, President Obama issued a directive to federal agencies to create a federal strategy to promote honey bee and other pollinator health.  This is a major step forward in acknowledging the plight of the honeybee and other pollinating insects and their importance to the US economy and food production.  It is estimated that honeybees contribute over $15 billion to the annual value of agiculture crops in the Unitied Stated.

The increasing severity of honeybee losses each combined with a rapidly reducing population of other pollinating insects has prompted President Obama to take action.  At a high level, the President's directive aims to:

1. Establish a pollinator health task force

2. Establish a pollinator health research plan

3. increase and improve pollinator habitat.

The loss of the honeybee will have a profound impact on the world as we know it.  Without honeybees, many of the foods we consume every day simply will not be produced or certainly not to the scale required to feed the worlds population.
